Protecting her Forests
The Challenge
Beautiful miombo forests line the shores of Lake Tanganyika. They are home to many wild animals including leopard, genet, serval, mongoose, reedbuck, duiker, jackal and even chimpanzees which are found as far south as Kasanga.
Many of the villagers on the lake shore are reliant on firewood to do their cooking while others buy charcoal which has been harvested from these forests. With the Lake populations growing and no reforestation programs, this is unsustainable.
Our Project
The project is structured in four steps:
Training local communities on forest management.
Planting fast growing forests around villages for harvesting of firewood.
Assisting individual households to purchase gas cookers for their cooking. Gas is cheaper, cleaner and more efficient than charcoal and so is the perfect solution to reducing the charcoal usage.
Investing in villagers by establishing small businesses selling gas refills at an affordable price, thereby starting up more businesses along the Lake.
Our Goals
During 2023 plant forests around local villages and on the islands of the Kipili archipelago for sustainable firewood harvesting.
Within 3 years offer families the opportunity to buy and pay off gas cookers for home cooking.
